What does a DOT tire date code mean?

Find and interpret the final four digits of a tire identification number.

Published and reviewed August 20, 2026 · Educational information, not a substitute for an in-person tire inspection.

How do you read the DOT date code?

For tires made since 2000, the final four digits of the Tire Identification Number indicate manufacturing week and year. A code ending in 2324 means week 23 of 2024.

Where is the complete code?

The full Tire Identification Number may appear on only one sidewall, so checking the inner side may be necessary. Do not confuse the date digits with the tire-size code.

Does a DOT mark guarantee current condition?

No. The DOT symbol is the manufacturer’s certification of compliance with applicable federal standards when manufactured; current safety still depends on condition, maintenance, damage and application.
