How do you read a tire size?

Understand a code such as 225/60R17 before searching for a replacement tire.

Published and reviewed August 20, 2026 · Educational information, not a substitute for an in-person tire inspection.

What does 225/60R17 mean?

In 225/60R17, 225 is the nominal section width in millimeters, 60 is the aspect ratio, R means radial construction and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches.

Where should you verify the correct size?

Check the driver-door placard and vehicle owner guidance, then compare the complete designation with the current tire. A similar diameter does not guarantee correct load capacity, speed rating or clearance.

Can you change tire size?

A size change should be evaluated for wheel width, overall diameter, load rating, speed rating, clearance, drivetrain behavior and manufacturer guidance. Confirm the application before purchase.
