When should a tire be replaced?
A tire should be replaced or professionally inspected when tread reaches 2/32 inch, cords are visible, a bulge or deep cut appears, pressure loss repeats, or vibration and irregular wear develop.
- Check tread and inflation monthly.
- Treat bulges, exposed cords and tread separation as urgent.
- Use the vehicle placard pressure, not the maximum molded on the tire sidewall.
Is the penny test enough?
The penny test is a quick screening method, not a complete condition assessment. It cannot reveal internal damage, unsafe repairs, age-related deterioration or every cause of irregular wear.
Does tire age matter if tread remains?
Yes. NHTSA notes that some vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend replacement at six to ten years regardless of tread. Follow the vehicle and tire maker guidance for the specific application.
